We are so pleased to present to you descriptions written by the science authors themselves describing what they were like at your age!
Did they want to write? Did they want to do science? Both? Neither?
Sometimes we have photos and sometimes we don't. That's ok.
One thing is for certain, as such terrific writers, you are sure to enjoy the way they say what they are sharing with you.

gummy/Chown.jpgis an award-winning writer and broadcaster, currently cosmology consultant for New Scientist magazine. He graduated from the University of London in 1980, gaining a first class degree in physics, and later gained a Master of Science in astrophysics from the Califormia Institute of Technology. His books on astronomy and physics are aimed primarily at the popular market, including Quantum Theory Cannot Hurt You, for which he was praised for "expressing opaque concepts with a unique clarity" (Thank you, Wikipedia)

In his words:
When I was 15, I had an English teacher who wrote flattering things across the stories I wrote. Suddenly, I wanted to be a writer! But, wait a minute, I wanted to be an astronomer too. How could I do both? The truth is I couldn't. In England - and hopefully this isn't true in the US - they don't let you do both arts and sciences at school. So I chose physics. But, in the back of my mind, even when I later went to Caltech to do astronomy, I still wanted to be a writer too. I wish I'd known at 15 that it was going to be possible - that I'd one day be able to do science AND write - because that's what I do. I get the best of both worlds. I am very, very fortunate. And, for that, I am thankful.

gummy/MaryRoach2.jpg Mary Roach is the author of four books that take a look at unusual topics from a scientific and historical perspective. She has written a book about cadavers (dead bodies), one about the afterlife and one about, hmm, stuff you best check with your parents before you read. Her latest book is about living and working in space called Packing for Mars!

At age 18  -- By now my budding interest in science has been replaced by an addiction to television sitcoms and a preoccupation with  boys.
I am enjoying my senior year physics course, mainly because of the crush I have developed on the teacher.   It will be the last serious science class I ever take.
