We are so pleased to present
to you descriptions written by the science authors themselves describing what they were like at your age!
Did they want to write? Did they want to do science? Both? Neither?
Sometimes we have photos and sometimes
we don't. That's ok.
One thing is for certain, as such terrific writers, you
are sure to enjoy the way they say what they are sharing with you.
is an award-winning writer and broadcaster, currently cosmology consultant
for New Scientist magazine. He graduated from the University of London in 1980, gaining a first class degree in physics,
and later gained a Master of Science in astrophysics from the Califormia Institute of Technology. His books on astronomy
and physics are aimed primarily at the popular market, including Quantum Theory Cannot Hurt You, for which he was
praised for "expressing opaque concepts with a unique clarity" (Thank you, wikipedia)
In his words:
*When I was 11, it was the most
fantastically brilliant time to be 11 in the history of the world. Why? Because every few months human beings were landing
on another world. I'm talking about the Moon. And it was my incredible luck to be around when those amazing things were
going on. I can't tell you how exciting it was. I kept all the newspaper cuttings. My dad used to get me up early in the
morning to see the fuzzy black-and-white TV pictures and I used to watch the nail-biting launches on TV. Even now,
thinking about it, a shiver goes down my spine. That's how exciting it was. Five million years humans had been on Earth
and I happened to be around when they first stepped on another world. What a piece of luck! No wonder I got switched on
to space and astronomy and science. Wouldn't you?

Mary Roach
is the author of four books that take a look at unusual topics from a scientific and historical perspective. She has written
a book about cadavers (dead bodies), one about the afterlife and one about, hmm, stuff I don't think you're reading about
yet. Ask your parents. Her latest book is about living and working in space called Packing for Mars!
At age 12. "This photo was taken during the era of the Potted Meat Experiments.
My neighbor Becky and I make little potted meat sandwiches and left them out in a variety of experimental settings:partly
buried in snow, hanging from a tree, etc. We'd periodically go examine them and look for animal tracks and take
copious field notes toward no apparent end.
