HomePrizes!How to EnterAwesome Science Authors!Science Authors at YOUR Age!About Your Co-hostsContact Us

Jeff and Joanne, your hosts, thought you might like to meet us!

We love reading, but it's not just because we are grown-up.
We've always loved reading, and it helped make us the people we are today!
Nothing is more exciting than exploring a new topic on your own,
with the help of an author who really knows the topic and can describe it well!

About Joanne Manaster

Joanne has always loved science! She never wanted to do anything else. Her mind has changed over the years as to what she wanted to do IN science, but she's always stuck with science!

Except for those few years she was a fashion model, where she was still thinking about science!

In her enthusiasm for science, she has created her own website called appropriately, Joanne Loves Science. She loves using social media such as Twitter, Youtube and Facebook to share
her love of all sciences.

Joanne is a biologist and teaches univerisity students some pretty nifty science stuff, such as how scientists are trying to make new body parts and how to understand the body better.
Most of her students go on to be doctors, veterinarians, engineers and scientists.

She helps with science fairs, the Science Olympiad and other very fun contests that help young people enjoy science! She also is in charge of a girls engineering camp. Lots of fun!

Joanne thinks science TV is cool, too, because she likes explosions and collisions as much as the next person!
She also knows that to be a scientist, you have to be able to read a lot and concetrate for long periods of time! Reading books help us gain those skills.

About Jeff Shaumeyer

Jeff has a lot more facial hair than Joanne does.

He's really smart

 Jeff also works in science!

And clearly, Jeff has not contributed all the fun details about himself, but will shortly!

You can follow him on twitter at @scienticity

Jeff is the program director for Scienticity.net

Wow, aren't you glad you aren't this nerdy looking?
Joanne at age 12!

So I was a little enthusiastic!
About science, that is.
At this age, I already knew I wanted to be a doctor!

When I was your age,
  • I liked looking at clouds,
     Clouds.JPG
     catching bugs,
     PrayingMantisSmall.jpg
helping with my parents' garden and
     reading books about astronomy! astronomybook.jpg
I liked looking at earthworms, but not touching them
    with my hands! Ewww
     worm.jpg
     I enjoyed making leaf collections
One day, I let caterpillars crawl all over my cello.
One of them formed a cocoon inside!
I only got in a little trouble from my teacher!

I would totally have entered this contest,
but there was no internet, email or camcorders

Even the selection of science books was pretty slim!

Jeff, age 12
Looking ultra-dorky

The first is a photo of me with my parents.,
but I do remember that turning twelve (I'm close to 13 in this photo)
was a watershed year: I got my adult library card and could read real
books! So, at the time of this photo I was probably working my way
through all the (Dewey Decimal) 500s that I could read.

Our Favorite Books!

Joanne loves many books!

But her most favorite, favorite science book is
Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond

You may not be ready for it yet, but keep it in mind one day in the future!

She also read Death from the Skies: These are the ways the world will end by Phil Plait three times!
It's fun and informative!

Her favorite authors:
Seymour Simon - writes great kids science books!
Mary Roach - takes a quirky look at science! Ask your parents before you read her books!

Jeff also loves books!
